Avoiding chaos in granular dampers

Granular dampers are passive devices used to attenuate mechanical vibrations. The most common configuration consists in an enclosure, partiallyfilled with particles, attached the vibrating structure that needs be damped. energy is dissipated due inelastic collisions and friction between grains inner walls of container as vibrates. As a result collisions, response system often results chaotic motion even if driving harmonic. Despite vibration attenuation achieved, this may render granular damper unsuitable for range applications. In work, we showcase two simple modifications enclosure design able mitigate damper. To end use Discrete Element Method simulations of: (a) conical base, (b) obstaclesfixed inside enclosure. We compare against standardflat-base basic characterized by measuring apparent mass loss factor. suppression assessed qualitatively via phase space diagram.
